The Experience of a Job

Date September 26, 2004

I’ve been trying to find a job that’s a little more related to my field (psychology).  Right now I do manual labor, and while it’s umm… great(?)… it’s not really that relevant to what I want to do.  I’ve found several job listings recently that would be a much better match for me.  They are all a little different, except for one tiny similarity:

They all want you to have experience!

So just to make sure I’ve got this figured out, let me rehash it real quick.  Entry-level positions that require a bachelor’s degree and not much else are fairly common.  But this experience thing is hard to figure out.  If they ALL want you to have experience… where does the experience come from?  Is sitting in a classroom for half of your life over the last 4 - 6 years not experience enough?  Sure… I’ve never filled out one of these places forms or done something “their way”.  But I mean… seriously?

How the hell are you supposed to get “experience” if all of the jobs out there require “experience” before you can apply?  It just makes no sense to me…
