Is Crazy 101 A Required Course?
September 25, 2005
In the post about my vacation I said to remind me to tell a story about the teacher I ran into while I was down there. I just noticed the reminder when I was linking back to that post, so here goes the story. I’ll change the names so no one gets their toes stepped on, but all other details are left as is.
This particular teacher, who I’ll refer to as Lenrietta, taught several business-related classes at my high school in Texas. She was always a little eccentric… but that’s what made her interesting. I had her for two classes (marketing and public relations, I believe).
One day she came to school excitedly telling everyone who would listen that her daughter, who I’ll refer to as Evita, had been accepted into the Texas A&M Vet School. Now I don’t know much about vet schools, but apparently A&M Vet School is hard to get in to. But she wasn’t telling people just that Evita had been accepted. She had details. According to Lenrietta, the admissions committee at A&M was so enthralled with Evita that they broke protocol and called to tell her she’d been accepted before they were supposed to. Evita had also apparently been admitted as fully paid by all kinds of free money that A&M was throwing her way because of how great she was.
Well this was obviously big news in a small East Texas town. The local paper decided to run a human interest story detailing the great achievement by such a talented local scholar. But when publication day finally came, that’s not the story the paper ran. Apparently, when the paper contacted A&M Vet School to get details on Evita’s admission, they were surprised to hear this from the school (and I quote):
“We’ve never heard of her… she never applied here.”
When the story broke, it was like play day at school. A couple of friends and I went and got another friend out of class. We headed to the business department so we could see what was going on. We found out from another teacher that Lenrietta had “taken the day off… you know… because of the thing in the paper”. This other teacher even had a few funny things to say about crazy Lenrietta. Why Lenrietta made up the story, we’ll never know. But to this day she still has an A&M Vet School bumper sticker on her car and talks about suing A&M for some reason or another. My suggestion to Lenrietta… sue the doctor who *didn’t* prescribe the drugs you so obviously needed to be on.
Teaching at my high school must have been very stressful. On a related side note… another teacher at this high school had to go on an extended leave of absence for an entire term to seek help. She thought she was special. Not just special… she thought she was Jesus Christ. The doctors at the state hospital didn’t agree.
