Happy Halloween
October 30, 2006
Halloween has always been one of my favorite holidays. I don’t go trick-turning for treats or partying. I usually spend it camped out on the couch watching scary movies. About a week ago I decided to set myself a Halloween goal: watch one scary movie each night until Halloween. I’ve done surprisingly well, considering I spent Saturday and Sunday night on the road.
So in honor of All Hallows Eve, here are a few good scary movies worth skipping the candy for:
- A Nightmare on Elm Street: The original is still a scary one. Yes… they got stupid after the first one. Yes… Freddy gets less scary and less scary every time we see him. But the original idea is still terrifying. And come on… what other movie violates all of the places we go to relax and feel safe (bed… bathtub… a friend’s house).
- Hellraiser: It’s a little out there. But it’s out there enough to be unique. Again, I’m referring to the original… not the sequels. Who’d have ever imaged that something as innocent as a puzzle box could hold so much horror.
- The Exorcism of Emily Rose: What can I say… this movie creeped me out. Jennifer Carpenter does a convincing possession and the strange things that happen to the lawyer defending her priest are just scary enough to make your hair tingle… without being tacky or unbelievable.
- Signs: Not really a horror movie I guess. But aliens scare me and this movie is by far the most terrifying alien account I’ve seen to date. It spooked me enough to make me check the windows before I went to bed… not to mention my newly acquired distaste for corn fields.
Those are a few of my favorites. What movies do you recommend for a festive Halloween movie-thon?

I had to look at a list of horror movies to try and remember what I had seen and what stood out. I’ve always been a fan of the genre so I had seen a lot from the list. It’s funny to think back on the movies and about how scary they were then and I wonder if they would have the same effect on me now. Some of the stand outs for me: Halloween, The Exorcist, Poltergeist, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Friday the 13th and The Ring (that girl creeps me OUT). It seems like finding a good scary movie nowadays is harder so maybe I’ve become desensitized. Perhaps I’ll have to get one of these and watch it again and see how I feel when the lights go out. Happy Haunting.

I’m a dork, but the Blair Witch Project scared me when we saw it in the theater. The fact that you see NOTHING except these three people getting progressively more scared and in a bad place was pretty unnerving. And yeah, I gotta agree with you on The Exorcism of Emily Rose. That movie still makes me pretty uncomfortable.
And you know my deal on FInal Destination … seeing as to how I was so terrified that I was unable to leave your apartment that time you made me watch it … I think I can mention it.

Ha! When Blair Witch came out I lived in an old townhouse with a creepy basement that had the washer/dryer hook up in it. Everytime I walked down there I had to keep my eye on the corners because I always pictured that kid standing there. It still creeps me out just thinking about it and I haven’t seen it in 6ish years. *shudder*

I’ve always been a fan of the Halloween series, but I think I’ve seen them all so many times that they don’t scare me anymore. And the newer Texas Chainsaw Massacre (not the prequel… the first remake) was pretty good, too.
The Blair Witch Project was pretty creepy the first time I saw it. It’d have been better if I hadn’t discovered it was fake the night before we saw it. Remember how they were pitching it as real for the longest time? There were even specials on TV about it!

I’ve watched Hellraiser like 4 more times after I watched it with you. I had weird dreams for about a week and a half. look what you did to me! heh

LOL! It’ll do that to you. I watched it several more times myself. It was on TV about 20 times between the night we watched it and Halloween.
It’ll probably be next Halloween before I see it again so I had to get my fix. Haha.
