A New Level of Spam Disgust

Like most people, I’m not a big fan of spam. In fact, I employ no less than 6 spam-fighting tools at Reader Meet Author. Sifting through the hordes of captured spam takes me upwards of 30 minutes on some days. Needless to say… I hate it.

But today I had a different kind of spam. It wasn’t an ad for medication or sex websites or any of the other “typical” types of spam comments.

Instead, it was a long, detailed story about the love affair (and sexual relations) between a brother and sister. As much as I hate to admit it, the writing was actually pretty good. But the story was disgusting. And very graphic.

At first I thought it was just a random sicko leaving their mark on my site. But when I’d seen the exact same story - word for word - four times by the end of my trip through the spam filter, I decided it was genuine, automated spam.

I don’t understand the mentality behind stuff like that. Did they think I’d mistake it for a good comment and let it through? Maybe that kind of crap would get mistakenly approved at another website. Who knows. But all it did was disgust me.

Sooo… I’ve bumped up the spam filters at Reader Meet Author. From now on, any comments caught by the spam filters on a post that is more than a month old get deleted immediately and automatically. I’ll never ever see them. So if you’re going to comment on something old… make sure it isn’t “spammy”.
