Invitations to Try Joost Online Television

Date April 17, 2007

Update: All invitations are gone. I’ll post again if I get some more.

If you like watching TV online, you may have already heard about a new product currently in beta called Joost.  It’s basically free Internet-based TV on demand with a few social features tossed in (like chatting with friends).

Joost™ the best of tv and the internetFor the time being, Joost is an invitation-only beta.  I’ve got 3 invitations to give out, so if you’d like to try Joost out, drop me a line.  Keep in mind that it’s a beta, and such, there will be glitches from time to time.  If you’d like to learn more about what Joost is like, check out their screenshot gallery.

Here is how Joost’s website describes the service:

Joost is a new way of watching TV on the internet. With Joost, you get all the things you love about TV, including a high-quality full-screen picture, hundreds of full-length shows and easy channel-flipping.

You get great internet features too, such as search, chat and instant messaging, built right into the program - so you find shows quickly and talk to your friends while you watch. And with no schedules to worry about, you can watch whatever you want, whenever you like - as often as you want. Joost is completely free, and works with most modern PCs and Intel Mac-based computers with a broadband connection.

Before requesting an invite, please look over the system requirements to make sure your computer is capable of running the software.

Windows System Requirements:

  • Windows XP Service Pack 2 with DirectX 9.0c
  • Pentium 4 processor, 1GHz
  • 512Mb or more RAM
  • A modern video card with DirectX support and at least 32Mb of VRAM
  • About 500 MB free disk space
  • The Joost software is a 10 MB download, expanding to 30-35 MB on disk. The remainder is used as a cache.
  • Broadband/ADSL (1Mbit/s downstream, 512Kbit/s upstream recommended, although lower speeds may well work)
  • 1 hour of viewing is 320 Megabytes downloaded and 105 Megabytes uploaded, which means that a 1 Gb cap will be exhausted in about 10 hours

Macintosh System Requirements:

  • Any Intel-based Mac running OS X 10.4
  • 512Mb or more RAM
  • About 500 MB free disk space
  • The Joost software is a 13 MB download, expanding to 30-35 MB on disk. The remainder is used as a cache.
  • Broadband/ADSL (1Mbit/s downstream, 512Kbit/s upstream recommended, although lower speeds may well work)
  • In 1 hour of viewing, 320 Mb will be downloaded and 105 Mb uploaded, which means that a 1 Gb cap will be exhausted in about 10 hours

So if your computer meets those requirements, and you’d like to try Joost out, just send me your first name, last name, and a valid e-mail address and I’ll get you an invite.

Update: All invitations are gone. I’ll post again if I get some more.
