Firefox Extensions for Website Owners
April 30, 2007
If you’re not using Firefox yet, come closer so I can slap your face. I’ll just assume that you are. One of the things I love about Firefox are the extensions. There are extensions that do almost everything - literally.
If you run a website, a blog, or some other online endeavor, there are a few Firefox extensions you simply must at least try:
- Web Developer - By far my favorite webmaster extension. Is there anything this guy won’t tell you about a site?
- SeoQuake - Tells you everything you ever wanted to know about how your site (or any site) looks to the search engines. The floating SEOBar is awesome!
- SearchStatus - Adds PageRank, Alexa rank (worthless… I know), and a right-click menu with many more stats and tools (Link report is especially helpful).
- Firebug - The granddaddy of webmaster plugins. Firebug is quite possibly the most informative plugin available for website owners.
If you don’t run a website or care about SEO then you might not get much from these extensions. They’re still good for snoopy, nosy purposes, though.
There’s always VideoDownloader for those without websites. It lets you download videos from YouTube (and other embedded video sites) onto your computer. Greasemonkey and Stylish let you make some amazing changes to the websites you visit most often (how would you like an adless MySpace or larger, fullscreen YouTube videos).
The possibilities are almost endless. And combined with Firefox’s better web security, standards compliance, and skinability… it makes using Firefox a no-brainer.
What are you waiting for… go download it now!

Firebug has saved my life a bunch of times - and is about the only extension I run these days. Even if it’s not your site, Firebug can be really useful for fixing broken sites so you can read the content - just by flipping a couple of CSS values you can often relay a page to be much more legible. Damn I sound like a geek!

Hahaha… naaa… you don’t sound like a geek (although I might not be the best judge of geekishness). I do the same thing sometimes. Between Firebug, Greasemonkey, and Stylish I think I’ve altered about… oh… 70% of the websites I visit.
But hey… that’s what makes Firefox great!

Here’s another plugin for website owners:
Whos Amung Us - It’s basically a stripped down version of a web statistics plugin. Shows you how many people are on your website at within the last 5 or so minutes. Easy install, no sign-up required.
(note: if you use the same button for 2 websites, you’ll get the amount of people currently on both websites)

I have one similar to that installed now called Who’s Online (you can see it under the “More” section in the sidebar). It shows you who’s here and if any bots are currently indexing your site. Pretty nifty!
