More Love For Commentators

Date May 8, 2007

I’ve added a couple of new plug-ins to Reader Meet Author to thank people for taking the time out of their day to leave a comment.  For those of you who’ve been here, I wanted to pass along what those new additions were… just so you’re not surprised… haha.

Top Commentators

At the bottom of the sidebar you’ll notice a list of Top Commentators.  Each time you leave a comment your number will go up.  The top 10 frequent commentators will get a mention and a link back to their site (if they have one).  I’m guessing the counter isn’t retroactive because there are people who’ve left a ton of comments in the past that aren’t on the list.  My apologies.  But don’t worry… in no time at all the list will be an accurate representation of the busiest members around here.

No Nofollow

I added another plug-in that removes the nofollow tag applied to links in comments after someone has left 5 comments.  The default was 10… but I bumped it down.  If you don’t have a website, this one won’t really apply to you.  The nofollow tag tells some search engines not to follow and/or count a link when determining the rank/popularity of a website.  If you’re a website owner… you want the nofollow tags removed.  After 5 comments at RMA, all of your links will show up to the search engines as full-fledged links.  But don’t try to scam me… I can manually adjust things ;)  Like the previous plug-in, I don’t think this one is retroactive.  So we’re starting the count… right about… NOW!

Thank you Emails

The final addition I made was a plug-in that sends first-time commentators an email thanking them for stopping by.  I wanted to mention it here briefly because I don’t know for sure whether or not it recognizes previous comments.  So juuuust in case you get an email thanking you for leaving your first comment, and you’ve left comments before… ignore it ;)  It’s a one-time thing.

Hi, I’ve found a few people using the email commenters plugin have had problems with it sending out multiple emails. Just yesterday I received about 40 from a single post on a blog, all saying ‘thankyou for visiting for the first time’.
Something to keep an eye out for - but your right - commenting visitors are to be cherished and thanked!

Ack! Well that’s no good. Doesn’t do much good to try to thank people for commenting if you end up flooding their inbox with junk. I might reconsider using that bad boy.

‘Cause with my luck, if a plugin can go haywire, it will go haywire. Haha.
