The Nuts Have It

Date June 6, 2007

I rarely get wrapped up in a television show.  That was not the case with Jericho on CBS.  I was devastated when they canceled it.  And I wasn’t the only one.  Fans from across the globe used an online nut vendor to flood CBS with nuts (which were representative of a scene from the show).

For a while CBS refused to budge and continued to express their intention to cancel the show for good.

But as time as shown again and again, a dedicated fan base is a powerful group.  CBS announced tonight they’ve reversed their decision and ordered at least seven more episodes of the show for mid-season.

I’m so excited I could practically pop.

But here’s the deal:  in order to continue the show past the just-ordered seven seasons, CBS has to see that there is, in fact, a large audience for the show and not just a handful of nuts (no pun intended).

So watch it.  All of season one is available to watch for free from the CBS website so you can get caught up if you’re not already a fan (and CBS is supposedly monitoring the online views).  They also plan to re-air season one on CBS this summer… so if you’d rather watch it on your television, keep your eyes peeled for it in your TV Guide.

For those who’ve never watched it… here’s a brief synopsis of the show’s main plot from Wikipedia:

The storyline revolves about the residents of Jericho, a small, rural Kansas town, in the aftermath of a series of nuclear attacks on most major cities in the contiguous United States. The series begins with a visible nuclear detonation of unknown origin over nearby Denver, Colorado, and a loss of power and modern communications, effectively isolating Jericho. Later, power is restored to Jericho by what is alluded to as the efforts of the U.S. government, but soon after, an Electromagnetic pulse (EMP) disables all electronics. Several themes addressed in the show regularly are the gathering of information, community identity, public order, limited resources, the value of family, and external and internal threats. The show features several mysteries involving the backgrounds of major characters, the perpetrators of the attack, and the extent of damage to the United States and its government.

Yes indeedy, this is fantastic news!! Jericho is easily the most captivating show I’ve seen in YEARS, and it rivals even my lifetime favorite The X Files in terms of my all-time television show favorites.

In an era of truly crappy television (think 32 different CSIs and 43 identical reality shows), Jericho stands out as intelligent, intriguing, and interesting.
