Hey Paris: "Acting Dumb" is Never Cute
June 11, 2007
From CNN: “Hilton to Walters: I’ll no longer ‘act dumb’“:
Paris Hilton says she will no longer “act dumb.”
The reality TV star and relentless publicity-seeker spoke with Barbara Walters by phone Sunday, a day after releasing a statement saying she hoped the media would focus on “more important things” than her 45-day jail sentence, according to ABC News’ Web site.
“I used to act dumb. … That act is no longer cute,” ABC quoted Hilton as saying.
Normally I wouldn’t waste my time writing about Paris Hilton. But there’s a lesson to learn here… and this just made me laugh so much that I couldn’t resist. She’s been in jail for what… a matter of days? And she acts like she’s been in the big house for years.
The thing is… sometimes it’s easy to spot when someone is “acting”. And I don’t think Ms. Hilton has been acting dumb at all. I wouldn’t mind sitting down with whoever told her that acting dumb was ever cute, too. They need to be brought up to speed.
Like it or not, Paris Hilton has power. She’s got power over young people who want to be like her and she’s got power over the media who want to cover her. I’m sure you’ve heard it before… but I’m still going to throw this idea out there:
With power comes responsibility
A lot of our friends in Hollywood (and the socialite world) could do to remember that. Paris Hilton has shown time and again that she’s not only irresponsible, but instead, seems to thrive on setting an example for young people on how not to act.
The only acting we’ll see from Ms. Hilton will be her attempt to not “act dumb”. And who knows… maybe that will actually have some positive benefit for the young people that look up to her (for whatever reason). Even if it’s only a public display, it could be beneficial for young people to see her try to change her ways.
Time will tell if Paris Hilton will go from “skanky socialite trash” to “effective young role model”… or if this is just another publicity stunt.
I, for one, am not holding my breath.
And now… after that momentarily lapse in topic judgement… we return to our regular programming…
